It seems I’ve been nominated for a thing called The Dragon’s Loyalty Award by the lovely Sarina over at SarinaLangerWriter. Here’s how it goes:

The Dragon’s Loyalty Award is meant to acknowledge those who regularly read and comment on your blog. The rules for it are pretty simple:
–Show off your achievement by displaying the award.
–Link back to the person who bestowed this award upon you.
–Nominate up to 15 of your regular readers (less than 15 is just fine, though).
–Let them know that they’ve been nominated.
–Share 7 interesting facts about yourself.

So I suppose this is the part where I share some facts about myself, huh? Let’s do this.

1. Everyone’s always asking me about my heritage, so I’ll just put that here and get it out of the way. On my dad’s side, I’m a quarter Swedish, one-eighth German, and one-eighth Irish. On my mom’s side, I’m Vietnamese. That’s the only bit anyone ever seems to care about, which leads me to factoid number two…

2. I can sometimes get really annoyed at people who ask about, or try to guess at my heritage. I used to love telling people about where my ancestors hailed from, but after years and years of questions, I started to notice they didn’t actually care about my white half, they just wanted to know what kind of asian I was. Nowadays, a question about my heritage will probably get some form of passive-aggressive answer, and I’m not sorry about it.

3. I am Canadian. No matter where my ancestors came from, I am Canadian. I have only a Canadian passport, I speak only Canada’s official languages, and I’ve never been to Vietnam, Sweden, Ireland, or Germany. I may have grown up with Vietnamese grandparents and two new year celebrations a year and traditional Vietnamese dresses, but despite how I look, I am not Vietnamese. It’s sad that I have to explain this so often.

4. Enough with the heritage facts, here are some facts about what I do. I write. “A lot, a lot, a lot,” in the words of my sister, and pretty much everyone else who knows me. I write on buses, at parties, in bed before I go to sleep, and pretty much anywhere else I can fit it in. This has been going on for ages. I’ll tell you guys more about it sometime.

5. I never wanted to be a writer. It wasn’t until after a year of writing every day that I even decided I liked writing. It wasn’t until another year or two after that that I even considered doing it after high school. I even took a year off after high school, trying to think up something else I wanted to do, but I ended up in Creative Writing anyway.

6. In an attempt to put off my fate, I did Film Studies in my first year of university. Sometimes, I wonder if I would’ve been able to put off the writing thing a little longer if I’d chosen Film Production instead. I gained a lot from my year of Film Studies, but I had absolutely nothing to offer the subject which was ultimately why I switched to Creative Writing.

7. I am utterly terrified of what being a writer will mean for my future.

And there we have it. Below are some awesome followers of mine (whose blogs I also follow) who’ve been active on my blog and who I am nominating for this “Dragon’s Loyalty Award”.

  1. I feel you for the vietnamese part! Especially when my more conservative aunts and uncles or friends of the family are getting angry since I don’t speak vietnamese at all but only French and English, and that I consider myself to be much more of a Candian/Montrealer than viet.
Thank you again for the nomination, it means a lot! ❤
